Selon la définition de Saint Augustin “le sacrement est le signe visible d’une grâce invisible, institué pour notre sanctification”.

Selon l’étymologie du mot, le sacrement signifie une chose secrète et sainte. Le catéchisme du Concile de Trente précise : ” Chez les grecs, il a la même signification que le mot mystère”. Et il ajoute “les docteurs latins ont pensé que certains signes sensibles qui produisent la grâce en même temps qu’ils la représentent , pouvaient très bien s’appeler Sacrements”.

Ainsi, il est essentiel que le sacrement soit un signe, c’est à dire quelque chose qui a une signification et que nous pouvons connaître facilement. Il est essentiel que ce signe nous conduise à une réalité plus grande, plus élevée. Cette réalité est celle de la vie divine que le sacrement signifie et qu’il produit.

Mais cette réalité est invisible. Seule la foi peut découvrir à travers le signe, la réalité signifiée.
